Children's Dentistry

One of the most important gifts you can give your child is a healthy smile. Kids have so much going on in their lives, exploring and discovering new things, and the last thing they need is a toothache that slows them down.

At Edmond Dental at Deer Creek, we believe that every child deserves to enjoy the best possible oral health. Dr. Joseph Tucker and our team have a special place in our hearts for children, and we want them to have a great foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Your Child’s First Visits

At Edmond Dental, we love working with our youngest patients and giving them a positive start with their dental care. We follow the American Dental Association's recommendation that children should start seeing the dentist when their first baby tooth emerges, but no later than age one. There are several reasons why we recommend these “happy” visits.

First, the goal of these early appointments is to help your son or daughter get comfortable with the idea of being in a dental office filled with unfamiliar faces and strange-looking machines. We’ll help them explore some of our equipment, count their teeth, and if they let us, Dr. Tucker will take a look in their mouth. We want your son or daughter to get comfortable with us and the surroundings so that they feel safe and secure with us.

We also encourage parents to take advantage of this time to ask any questions they have about oral care for their child or concerns about bottle-feeding or thumb-sucking.

Ongoing Care for Your Growing Child

We build on the success of early dental visits so that when your son or daughter is ready for their first cleaning, they are already receptive to us. If Dr. Tucker finds a cavity in a baby tooth, he will fill it, so it stays healthy and intact until the permanent tooth is ready to emerge.

Children also need a routine of dental exams and teeth cleanings just as adults do to monitor their dental development, spot any problems, and correct them before they cause your child any discomfort.

Supplemental Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that’s essential for strong, healthy teeth. If Dr. Tucker determines that your child isn’t receiving enough fluoride through the water supply and other sources, he will recommend a fluoride application that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent the growth of harmful oral bacteria.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are another preventive treatment we offer to help protect your child’s teeth from bacteria that causes cavities. Molars and premolars both have depressions and deep grooves that collect food particles and bacteria. A sealant is a thin plastic coating that settles into these grooves and forms a protective shield over the tooth to seal it.

Custom Sports Mouthguards

Every child who participates in sports activities needs to wear a protective mouthguard. It's easy to find generic mouthguards, but they won’t provide the same durability or protection that a customized mouthguard does. We take impressions of your child’s teeth to design protective wear that fits them comfortably and protects their teeth from damage.
